Southeast Singing Pictures

Singing Pictures, organized and sponsored by CrossSound, was the result of two years of collaborations between composers and filmmakers/video artists from around the world. Outstanding musicians and music students from Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan were joined by guests from the Cavani String Quartet, the Flagstaff Symphony, and the Met Orchestra to perform world premieres of works by composers from Alabama, Germany, Japan, Korea, and Sitka to the silent videos of artists from Germany, Montana, New York City, Ohio, and Seattle. After the Alaska premiers, the works will be performed again in Chicago. Click here for locations, dates, and times of all future performances. Theo Lipfert, curator for the visual part of the show emphasizes the collaborative aspect: "In 'Southeast Singing Pictures,' composers do not write a musical work 'about' a video, and video artists do not create 'music videos.' Each team member has figured how to work together to create elements that are not subordinate to the creative work of the other member. Each collaborators' contribution is completely interwoven into the work of the team as a whole."

"It has been a great pleasure to work with CrossSound. They are uniquely rooted in their local community, and strongly connected to the larger creative world ."
