The Eternal Return is a work for four films reworked by New York artist Matt Marello and music for four ensembles and prerecorded audio composed by C. P. First. The films are endless video loops created from existing Hollywood films into which the film-maker is inserted as a character in the drama -- the protagonist has been digitally replaced by the video artist. Each loop intends to project a sense of foreboding (albeit with an element of humor) illustrating in some way Nietzsche's notion of "the eternal return, -- the idea that mankind is condemned to repeat past mistakes over and over again, never achieving the elevated status of being he called the "Übermensch."
